The challenge

How it comes together

Here is a real-world story of how this work has been implemented and used to learn and solve some complex challenges. This is a university lecture I gave about this project and its real-world application:

How to build it

There are a number of ways we can create a “Google maps” for learning, and a GPS that runs on it to guide you to any learning goal. In the linked blog post I’ll describe three approaches I have tried over the years, their pros and cons, and why the best results will come by combining all three approaches.

The Opportunity

3 trillion dollars is operating on top of an outdated 100-year-old foundation. The Learning map can provide a powerful replacement foundation. While not solving all problems, this foundation allows for new solutions to be developed on top of it by anyone. Here are four solutions this map would directly create:

  • Create a powerful foundation on-top of which anyone can build solutions rapidly, and existing solutions can be enhanced.

  • The Map could support many awesome online learning platforms like Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn learning and other services like Google search and youtube, as a complementary tool driving greater usage and engagement, rapidly scaling as a crowd supported global map of learning.

  • Empower learners to do something that is just not possible today, learn what they need when they need it.

  • Become a powerful foundational tool for any educational environment:

Earlier work and prototypes

We have been working on different versions of this for several years with one of our most interesting versions being one where we tested to see if kids who would never go to school could use this to empower themselves and learn in peer-to-peer groups. Here is a quick video about it:
