Defining metrics for success
Defining where we are going and how we will be measuring success is important. One of the ways we are doing so is by developing towards and measuring against specific impacts we want to attain.
We have created this impact roadmap infographic to illustrate this, and I'll link to the more detailed version of the roadmap at the bottom of this post.
Phase 1 - The baseline
What is the impact we are aiming for
- Children are able to use this content as a supplemental learning resource
- Ability to learn basic literacy and numeracy with supervision
- Ability to learn computer literacy
- Ability to learn basic concepts
- Ability to learn basic logic and reasoning skills
What we provide
In this phase, which acts as our baseline. we are deploying stock tablets, loaded with general educational apps , games and resources. Essentially a library resource of content that the children could access and use, similar to what many of our kids in the developed world are given at home.
Phase 2
What is the impact we are aiming for
- What is included in the previous phase +
- Children are able to use this content as a supplemental learning resource
- Ability to learn more detailed concepts
- Progress through a learning plan, curriculum with outside support
- Community have access to some analytics and metrics
What we provide
- What is included in the previous phase +
- Curated educational apps. games aligned with particular goal/s
- Usage and learning analytics and metrics
Phase 3
What is the impact we are aiming for
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Children are able to access a wide environment of content
- Children are able to access content locally produced in context for their environment, culture and needs
- Children are able to access a far more diverse library of content from a variety of viewpoints including local viewpoints
- Publishers of any type can produce content and distribute it on the platform
- Publishers can create business around producing content therefore further incentivising quality content to rise to the top
What we provide
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Access to an open library of additional content
- Authoring tools/framework to produce localized content
- A crowd sourced content creation community
Phase 4
What is the impact we are aiming for
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Children get personalized learning based around needs / interests
- Children are able to learn about things they are interested or passionate about.
- A visual map of everything they have and can still learn and how they relate, providing increased engagement, understanding of context and ultimately learning
- Radically increasing engagement, understanding and educational achievement.
- Children are empowered by being given control of their learning and information about their progress, metrics and other data
- Pedagogy experts and educators are empowered to create, share and validate their approaches.
- Pedagogy experts and educators are empowered to create, share and validate their best practice and knowledge into an open platform that all can benefit from.
What we provide
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Adaptive engine providing personalized learning recommendations
- An Explorative interface (explorative learning)
- Game mechanics built into UI and explorative interface
- Child friendly analytics and metrics
- A crowdsourced learning map creation community
- A crowd sourced pedagogy and recommendation algorithm creation community to feed the adaptive engine with updated algorithms and learning map structures
Phase 5
What is the impact we are aiming for
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Deeper learning is achieved by encouraging learners to teach each other.
- Leadership, social and creative skills are enhanced through encouraging mentorship to take place.
- Teamwork, social skills and problem solving skills are enhanced through encouraging group work.
- Physical skills and real world play enhances learning experience by bringing the learning out of the device and into the real world, like in regular classrooms.
- Game mechanics and reward systems enhance both the peer to peer learning that takes place but also the overall engagement of the learners and the community.
- Publishers of any type can produce social content and distribute it on the platform.
- Publishers can create business around producing social content therefore further incentivising quality content to rise to the top.
What we provide
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Peer to peer learning engine (matching children to learn together)
- Mentor to Learner engine (matching mentors and Learners)
- Group learning engine (matching groups to learn collaboratively)
- Social content that children engage with collectively in the real world, like physical games, activities and projects
- Social features and game mechanics that encourage communication and collaboration
- A crowd sourced social content creation community.
Phase 6
What is the impact we are aiming for
- What is included in the previous phases +
- Children are able to ask questions they may never have the time, or courage to ask their friends, family or teachers. They are able to search for answers without relying on others, they can take their learning into their own hands.
- Children are able to interact with the platform through natural language interactions
- Children's short to long term engagement is significantly increased
- Adaptive engines understanding of the child increases exponentially, being able to enhance all other aspects of the platform to drive deeper learning.
What we provide
- What is included in the previous phases +
- AI persona that provides the learner engaging interactions and conversations.
- Voice recognition that allows the child to use their native language
- Natural language understanding

Scaling the impact
This impact does not mean much if it is not easily reproducible and scalable, which is why from the ground up this has been one of the top design guidelines we have implemented. The solution we are developing is designed to be highly scalable and viral in it's growth capacity. The following chart is an example of how the scale could be achieved:
Sustaining the Impact
Making sure the project is sustainable is crucial if we are to reach our goals. Our strategy here is to initially focus on validation within a number of diverse and challenging environments, then with market validation grow into various other available revenue streams.
